This short ATV video is from our Oct 10, 2021 PAUC Casner Mtn Ride showing the viewpoint of the Casner Switchbacks about 3/4 of the way up the 3-mile continuous climb to the summit. The Casner Mountain Trail above and north of the Sedona Red Rock Ranger District OHV Area is a multi-use trail open year-round to hikers, mountain bikers, and motorized vehicles less than 62 inches wide. For vehicles greater than 62 inches wide, the trail is only open mid-May to mid-October by special NFS permit. There are 22 free permits given out by the Coconino NFS per year. There are 11 permits given out for weeks 1-11 (May 10 through July 1) and 11 permits for weeks 12-22 (July 26 through October 10). Only one group permit will be issued per calendar week during the open season, allowing for a one-day visit. No less than 3 vehicles, no more than 10 vehicles and groups smaller than 25 people. Permit holders may be asked to combine groups on specific weekends to fill out the 10 vehicle limit. A “waiting list” approach is used to match attendees with a permit holder. Glenda Carlson, our ride leader, had been on a waiting list for a few years and our group got the last permit for the 2021 year. The trail requires four-wheel-drive capability and high clearance due to its challenging terrain and steep gradients. The author burned out a ATV belt on the 18%-20% gradient switchbacks on the 3-mile continuous climb to the summit.
