There will be dry camping at the staging area (33.889607\, -109.255608) near Alpine AZ however there are RV parks and hotels in Springerville/Eager (about 25 minutes away)\, the Pinetop-Lakeside area (about 30-40 minutes away)\, Greer (about 20 minutes away)\, and the Sunrise Resort (15 minutes away).   This event requires registration.\n\n\nRides will be offered Friday and Saturday. Rides will depart between 9a.m. and 10a.m. both days.\n\n\nBE PREPARED: This is a remote area\n– There are limited services. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Sept 17\, 2022 – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Bumble Bee Historical Mines Tour Ride \n  \nThe member ride sign-ups have been low this past month due to the heat and weekend monsoon activity so I am opening this Bumble Bee Historical Mines Tour Ride to the general public and PAUC Facebook Followers (ATVs\, UTVs\, and SxSs only).  I have not posted this ride since last year\, so trail conditions are unknown.  This is one of those fun rides that you want to bring your spouse\, significant other\, or that friend you been wanting to introduce to off-roading.  I am limiting this ride to 15 vehicles unless another flight ride leader steps forward to lead a second flight.  Put yourself on the waiting list if the ride fills up.   \nFYI – only PAUC club member names will show up on the attendees list.   The ride leader will see everyone’s names including their passengers for the Name Tags. \n  \nRegister for the ride on our Event Calendar on our internet website (https://phoenixatvutvclub.org/event/sept-17-open-to-the-public-bumble-bee-historical-mines-tour-ride/) and not on our Facebook Group. \n  \nThis is one of my favorite Four Points of the Compass rides near Phoenix.  It is also one of the club’s most downloaded GPS Tracks from our Archive Library at 5\,680 views.  I usually do this ride or a variation of the ride a couple of times a year and a lot of veteran club members have already gone on this ride. \nIF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, EMAIL ME OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW.   Member guests and friends would like to go on this fun scenic ride. \n  \nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nOn Saturday\, Sept 17\, 2022\, at 9:00 AM\, I will lead a Phoenix ATV/UTV Club Ride for PAUC Members and PAUC Facebook Followers on a ride in the Bumble Bee OHV Area.  Depending on the group size and scenic stops\, we should be back at the staging area by 5:00pm-5:30pm.   Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.   Bring a lunch\, snacks\, and beverages for eating on the trail. \n  \nRIDE HIGHLIGHTS \n\nLots of scenic off-road travel on a number of mining trails through Turkey Creek\, Government Springs Wash and the Bumble Bee Wash OHV areas.\n\n\nSome Easy-to-Moderate level difficulty side trails for meet-and-greet Kodak moments visiting the old abandoned Bumble Bee Ranch line-cabin and traveling to a distant hidden canyon to see the 75′ Antelope Creek Waterfall pool area with Petroglyphs (aka Bumble Creek Waterfall). The waterfall area may only be a wet smear with the low water tables due to the drought but it usually has a few spring-fed waterpools.\n\n\nWe will visit the Hidden Treasure Gold Mine\, American Flag Mine (aka Old Brooks Mine)\, and the Turkey Creek reclamation route and viewpoint overlooking the old Golden Turkey Mine (aka Silver Pheasant Mine) and its large stone cabin and explosives shed.\n\n\nAfter some fun twisty desert riding in the sandy Bumble Bee Wash and Government Springs Wash\, we arrive at the Cleator Yacht Club saloon in the town of Cleator for a 30-min lunch. Pack a lunch\, munchies\, water\, and beverages for yourself. Bathroom facilities area available in the bar area. This is a fun Meet-and-Greet lunch spot so walk around or grab a table on the front porch\, at the historic bar\, or out back in the marina area.\nDepending on time constraints\, there could be a possible side trip after lunch on the Moderate-level switchback mining trail up to the old DeSoto copper mine.\nFast return on the two-lane Crown King road with a possible final stop at the St John’s Mine on a viewpoint hill.\nPlan on 50 miles in length with all the meet-and-greet stops and side-trip ride segments. Extra fuel is usually not required but each rider should know their machine’s fuel consumption. There are no gas stations in Cleator.\n\n  \n   \nPOST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nDepending on the sign-up response\, there may be a post-ride Desert Dessert Bar (sodas\, water\, cookies\, cake slices) so stay for a little while to socialize and decompress after the ride. \n  \nTRAIL RATING \nThis ride is rated an overall Easy-to-Moderate Ride [Level 1–2\, Green–Blue] but could occasionally have some difficult sections resulting from a recent washout.  Definition: May have some spots that are off-cambered; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12 months of riding experience).  UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.  2WD vehicles s/b okay.  Low range gear recommended for a very few rocky areas.  Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nDrive up I-17 up to the Bumble Bee/Crown King exit 248.  Turn west and head down the asphalt road to the bottom of the hill approximately 2.75 miles from the exit. The asphalt road ends at the bottom of the hill. The staging area is about a ¾ mile further down the Bumble Bee/Crown King DIRT ROAD on the west side of the road. You can view it on the Google Maps Satellite view at coordinates N34.1614° W112.1663°.   We will depart the staging area at 9:00AM so try to get there before 8:00AM to unload your vehicle.  The SAFETY MEETING will be at 8:45AM.  The ride will depart at 9:00AM and return approximately 5:00PM. \nStaging area on Google Maps:\nEnter the GPS coordinates N34.1614° W112.1663° or (Google coordinates 34.161400\, -112.166300 ) into Google Maps and zoom out to see the way from the I-17 Exit 248 to the staging area. \nThere is also an overflow staging area about 1/4 mile past the Bumble Bee staging area if the lot is full. There are a few parking spots along the asphalt road as you come down from the I-17 exit 248 too. \n  \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES:  \nPease observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing. If you don’t feel well or have not practiced self-quarantine for the past two weeks\, DO NOT come on this ride and put others at risk!  All participants MUST wear a mask or dust mask\, kerchief\, bandana\, scarf\, or other means of protective personal equipment for their personal safety as well as for the safety of other participants. \n  \nTAILGUNNER AND SECOND FLIGHT LEADER NEEDED\nI am looking for an experienced member with a radio to volunteer as my tailgunner.  Otherwise\, a responsible rider will be appointed at the staging area.   Other riders with radios can volunteer as mid-pack wingmen to maintain radio contact.  If an experienced PAUC Member/Ride Leader wants to be a second flight leader\, I will open the ride to more riders. \n  \nCOMMUNICATION\nLeader\, mid-pack wingmen\, and tailgunner will be on GMRS/FRS Channel 5 (sub-channel 0) in case you want to bring your walkie-talkies or CB / HAM radios.  The corresponding UHF channel frequency is 462.6625 MHz depending on your radio.  I highly recommend bringing a walkie-talkie to listen to approaching traffic and trail conditions. \n  \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker. Dress appropriately and keep hydrated. Bring a lunch\, snacks\, and beverages. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each driver should know their vehicle’s gas consumption and plan accordingly. \nHelmet that is properly fitted\, fastened\, and has a USDOT safety rating for those 18 years of age and younger who ride on an OHV. Riders in an OHV such as a ROV / UTV / SxS or similar vehicle\, while recommended for safety\, do not require a helmet unless a rider is under 18 years of age. The Phoenix ATV/UTV Club promotes the use of helmets on all its rides. Eye protection is required for operators of vehicles not equipped with a windshield. DESCRIPTION:Thursday Sept 15\, 2022 – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC “Sunset and Space Station Night Ride” – Carefree to Humboldt Mtn   \nThe member ride sign-ups have been low this past month due to the heat and weekend monsoon activity so I am opening this NIGHT RIDE to the general public and our PAUC Facebook Followers (ATVs\, UTVs\, and SxSs only).  I will only take a total of 15 vehicles as the staging area parking lots can only hold 15 vehicles and recovery trailers. \nFYI – only the names of PAUC members will show up on the attendees list.  The ride leader will see everyone’s names including the passengers to make Name Tags.\n  \nRegister for the ride on our Event Calendar on our internet website (https://phoenixatvutvclub.org/event/sept-15-pauc-sunset-and-space-station-night-ride-for-beginners-ride-carefree-to-humboldt-mtn/)  and not on our Facebook Group. \nLooking for a fun family outing of pizza\, mountain sunsets\, starry nights\, and a chance to see the International Space Station from the top of a mountain?  Then we have a local North Scottsdale/Carefree area NIGHT RIDE for you!   A majority of OHV riders have never been on a night ride so let’s introduce you to a beginner’s version of a night ride.  We did this ride twice last year and it was a lot of fun!  Timing of this night ride only occurs a few times of the year with the International Space Station Flyover at a specific inclination just after sunset. \nThe ride was highlighted in the June 2021 issue of our Happy Trails and Dusty Roads newsletter (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dQ75L0r7iARJTaxQBHHfFZ4duivkQMq8/view?usp=sharing). \n  \nStaging area parking spaces will limit this to 15 vehicles.  Join us for a short easy non-technical Thursday night ride in the nearby North Scottsdale/Carefree area on level terrain with some easy dirt road hill climbs during that Thursday’s overhead flyover of the International Space Station. After watching the sunset from the top of Humboldt Mtn FAA Radar Installation at 5150’\, the dark night sky should make for great viewing of the space station.  The ride’s close proximity to Phoenix will also allow people to get home at a reasonable hour. This is a great ride for a FIRST-TIME NIGHT RIDER.  We are going to ride up to Humboldt Mtn in daylight to view the surrounding terrain before the sunset.  Views of Horseshoe Lake\, Bartlett Lake\, Four Peaks\, and the surrounding Cave Creek Mining District generate one of those “Wow!” Kodak moments.  It is extremely enjoyable and scenic! \n\nI usually get a few inquiries from members and friends that like to go on my rides.  If you have an EXTRA OPEN SEAT in your SxS or UTV or want to volunteer as a tailgunner or a flight leader\, let me know.  Send me an email (bob.maitzen@gmail.com).   Open seat offers get to move to the front of the pack. 🙂\n  \nGroup photos from the May 2021 night ride \n    \n   \n  \nBring a flashlight and/or headlamps for walking around and reloading your vehicle after the ride.  Stock headlights on your vehicle should suffice. There is no need to have an LED lightbar on your vehicle for this easy night ride but it is always nice to team up with someone on the return to the staging area. This is not a fast ride nor a long ride at 24 miles roundtrip. \n  \nRIDE HIGHLIGHTS \n\nA short 0.5 mile NE ride from the Blue Wash Trailhead parking area will be a meet-and-greet PIZZA PARTY under one of the gazebos in the Tonto NFS Sears-Kay Hohokam Indian Ruins (Hohokam village 1050-1200AD).  The park entrance is at Mile Marker 2.9 on the Seven Springs/Cave Creek Road.  If you would like to walk up to the Indian Ruins on the hill\, please arrive early and allow yourself at least 45-minutes BEFORE the Pizza Party do the 1/2 mile loop hillside trail walk. There will be a Sign-In roster sheet at one of the gazebo tables.\n\n\nThe ride will officially start and depart from the Sears-Kay Indian Ruins parking lot (N33° 53.150′ W111° 48.968′) at 5:30PM.  The PIZZA PARTY will start at 4:30PM.  It is a 2-minute ride from the nearby Blue Wash Trailhead parking area (recovery vehicles) to the Indian Ruins parking lot.  You CANNOT stage or park your recovery vehicles in the Indian Ruins parking lot.\n\n\nDestination highlight of the ride is to the top of Humboldt Mtn to see the FAA radar installation at 5150′ at sunset via the Seven Springs/Cave Creek Road [FR24] north of Scottsdale/Carefree AZ.  It is a two-lane passenger car smooth dirt road for 8 miles with an easy 4-mile ascent to the top of Humboldt via the SR562 asphalt maintenance road which takes about 45-60 minutes to get there from the staging area. There are two vaulted toilet stops along this ride.  One is at the Sears-Kay Hohokam Indian Ruins staging area parking lot and the other is at the Bronco Trailhead parking area on the way to/from the Humboldt Mtn FAA Radar Installation.\n\n\nOn Thursday\, Sept 15\, 2022\, the Sunset is at 6:34PM so we will try to get up to Humboldt Mtn by 6:15PM to view the surrounding terrain and mountain shadows before the sunset.  Bring a camp chair or stool to relax and watch the sunset anf ISS Flyover.  Views of Horseshoe Lake\, Bartlett Lake\, Four Peaks\, and the surrounding Cave Creek Mining District generate one of those “Wow!” Kodak moments.\n\n\nThe International Space Station will pass directly overhead at 7:16PM for 7 minutes rising from 10° above SW to 87° and setting 10° above NE.  Flying overhead at 254 miles at 4.76 miles/sec = 17\,227 MPH\, it will look like the planet Venus in brightness and size.  We will head home after the fly over.\n\n\nThe route is 24 miles roundtrip and should take about 3 hours which includes the hour-long sunset photo stop and International Space Station sighting at the top of Humboldt Mtn.  We should be back at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking area around 8:30PM.\n\n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nHere are the directions to the staging area.  After unloading your vehicle at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking area\, drive 0.5 miles NE on the paved Cave Creek Road to the Sears-Kay Hohokam Indian Ruins park entrance at Mile Marker 2.9.  There is park signage at the entrance.   Inside the park\, there will be the Meet-and-Greet PIZZA PARTY and sign-in table under one of the gazebos.  You can also park along both sides of the road but give enough space for someone to retrailer their quad. \nThe ride will depart at 5:30PM from the nearby Sears-Kay Hohokam Indian Ruins (0.5 miles NE of parking area) after the 5:15PM safety meeting.  Get there EARLY to unload\, sign-in\, and meet-and-greet other riders and have a slice of Costco pizza.  YOU CANNOT UNLOAD YOUR QUAD IN THE INDIAN RUINS PARKING LOT. \n  \nDirections from East Valley / Scottsdale by I-101 & Pima Rd \nTake Pima Rd exit 36 on the I-101 and head north on Pima Rd 11.8 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stop sign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will pass the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Continue straight on Cave Creek Rd towards the Seven Springs area.  The parking area is at Mile Marker 2.3 on the right side of the road at N33° 52.622′ W111° 49.019′ (33.877033\, -111.816983) at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking lot. \n  \nDirections from West Valley or North Phoenix Area. \nTake Carefree Hwy east to Scottsdale Rd (7200E).  Scottsdale Rd becomes Tom Darlington Dr north of Carefree Hwy.  Turn north on Tom Darlington Dr and go 0.9 miles north to Stagecoach Pass Rd.  Turn right (east) on Stagecoach Rd and go 2.0 miles (third stopsign) to Pima Rd.  Turn left (north) on Pima Rd and go 0.3 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stopsign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will pass the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Continue straight on Cave Creek Rd towards the Seven Springs area.  The parking area is at Mile Marker 2.3 on the right side of the road at N33° 52.622′ W111° 49.019′ (33.877033\, -111.816983) at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking lot. \n  \nOverflow Parking Area \nAn overflow parking/staging area is 0.2 miles further around curve at the bottom of hill on the west side of the Blue Wash [N33° 52.695′ W111° 48.935′  (33.878250\, -111.815583)] at Mile Marker 2.5. \n  \nTRAIL RATING \nThis 3-hr night ride has an Easy-level trail rating [Level 1; Green] on a 2-lane graded dirt road with some asphalt road.  ATVs / UTVs / SxSs / ROVs / sport quads are okay on this trail.  Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES \nPlease observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing. DESCRIPTION:June 25\, 2022 – Desert Vista OHV Area – Camp Creek Wash Exploratory Ride (North Scottsdale AZ) \nI have not done a Camp Creek Wash to Needlerock ride in about three years.  I want to do an exploratory ride in this North Scottsdale Desert Vista OHV Area during the day to plan out a future night ride.  I have done this short ride only a couple of times and want to explore some offshoot side canyons and return on the plateau trails above the creek valley.  Depending on the side trails\, the ride will only be about 40 miles long. \nThe destination highlight at the end of Camp Creek Wash Canyon is the Needle Rock Campground on the Verde River Recreation Site below Bartlett Lake Dam.  This will be one of those short fun sandy wash & canyon rides where you want to bring the wife\, family members\, significant other\, or that friend that you been trying to coax into ATV riding to come along. \n \nNeedle Rock Campground Area on the Verde River Recreation Site \n  \nIf you have an extra seat in your SxS or UTV for the ride\, email me to let me know at bob.maitzen@gmail.com.     \n I usually get a few inquiries from members and friends that like to go on my rides.  Members can also asked about an Open Seat offer in the Comments section.  RIDE INCENTIVE:  Preferential placement to front of the pack to those offering an extra open seat in your SxS or UTV for the ride. \n  \nTRAIL RATING \nThis will be an EASY–MODERATE level trail rating (Level 1–2\, GREEN–BLUE) mostly in sandy washes since trail conditions are unknown.  Definition: May have some rough spots that are off-cambered; some hilly/rocky spots and a few steep slopes; recommended for riders with at least 1 year riding experience with ability to ride at medium-to-high speeds on sandy uneven terrain).  Parts of the trail follows canyon washes\, which can change after heavy rains and flooding.  UTVs / SxSs / ROVs / 2WD Sports Quad\, and passengers on Two-Up ATVs are okay on this trail.  Low range gear and 4WD recommended for a few rocky areas.   Kids on 2WD Sports Quads should be okay. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe departure staging area is at the intersection of the Camp Creek Wash on Bartlett Dam Road.  You will see a roadside Camp Creek Wash sign about a city block before the wide staging area on both the north/south sides of the road.  Park on either side of the road… just be careful that you don’t get stuck in the sand and try to leave room for other vehicles to park and unload. \nThe ride will depart at 9:00AM after the 8:45AM safety meeting.  Get there EARLY to unload\, sign-in\, and meet-and-greet the other riders.  I would like to explore some of the side canyons of the Camp Creek Wash for future club rides.  There may be some narrow side canyons where the SxSs might have to turn around.  It is about 11 miles to the Needle Rock campground on the Verde River.  I plan to return using the upper plateau trails to explore some other access trails. \nDirections from East Valley / Scottsdale by I-101 & Pima Rd \nTake Pima Rd exit 36 on the I-101 and head north on Pima Rd 11.8 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stop sign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will hit the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Turn right onto Bartlett Lake Rd and proceed 2.8 miles to the Camp Creek Wash staging area at 33°50’56.1″N 111°47’11.4″W (Google map coordinates 33.848917\, -111.786500) \nDirections from West Valley or North Phoenix Area. \nTake Carefree Hwy east to Scottsdale Rd (7200E).  Scottsdale Rd becomes Tom Darlington Dr north of Carefree Hwy.  Turn north on Tom Darlington Dr and go 0.9 miles north to Stagecoach Pass Rd.  Turn right (east) on Stagecoach Rd and go 2.0 miles (third stopsign) to Pima Rd.  Turn left (north) on Pima Rd and go 0.3 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stopsign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will hit the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Turn right onto Bartlett Lake Rd and proceed 2.8 miles to the Camp Creek Wash staging area at 33°50’56.1″N 111°47’11.4″W (Google map coordinates 33.848917\, -111.786500) \nYou can download turn-by-turn instructions to the staging area onto your smartphone using the embedded map at the bottom of the ride description. \n  \nDESERT VISTA OHV AREA MAP \nYou can download a free trail map at https://fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd734580.pdf  or find the map under the Members-Only-Access/Archive Libraries/Outside Reference Maps Library on our club website. \n \n  \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES \nPlease observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing. Peeley Trailhead)\nMount Ord Lookout/Viewpoint\n1-mile side-trip to Pala Mine Oven\n2-mile side-trip to Little Mt Ord Viewpoint (if not closed due to wildfire recovery)\n\n      \n   \n \nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nOn Saturday Dec 18th\, at 9:00 AM\, I will lead a ride north of the Sunflower AZ / Four Peaks Tonto National Forest area over to the Mazatzal Mountains (Mt Peeley trailhead) and then up to the top of Mount Ord Lookout.   It will have a couple of extended side-trips to scenic viewpoints.  This is a 50-mile ride that takes 6.5 hours (with scenic meet-and-greet stops & lunch) through some varied and beautiful high desert / mountain scenery.  Bring a camera for those Kodak moments. \nSet OHV odometer to zero (0) at the staging area.  Our first leg of the ride will be a 20-mile round-trip scenic ride north of the staging area on FR 201 into the shady pine trees up to the Arizona Trail / Mazatzal Wilderness Mountains trailhead.   This is a very smooth scenic ride (usually “passenger car smooth”) on graded road from 4000′ to 6700′.   We will have a short 1-mile side-trip on the way down a Moderate-rated rocky trail to the Pala mine oven.   The area was known for mining Cinnabar ore to make Mercury. Hopefully\, the watershed rains have not torn up that trail too bad.   On the way up to the Mt. Peeley trailhead\, there is one of those “Wow!” moments coming around a bend and seeing the sunlight hit the Mazatzal Mountain range.   We will have some short stops on the way for those special Kodak moments.  I t is a 20-mile smooth roundtrip ride but extremely enjoyable and scenic!   We backtrack and return to the staging area on the same FR 201 route. \nThe second leg of the ride will then cross to the EAST side of SR 87 to climb the FR 626 road up to the top of Mount Ord.   The description of the Mount Ord Lookout trail can be found on page 120 of the 2nd edition of the “Guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails” (by Charles A. Wells & Matt Peterson).  It is 12-miles long with steep grades and elevations ranging from 3200′ to 6700′.   It is fully-graded and usually smooth enough for a passenger car to get to the top. \nThe 3\,256′ elevation rises immediately and continuously from the SR 87 & FR 626 Mt Ord intersection to the top at 6\,747′.   On our way\, we will have a 2-mile side-trip on FS 1688 to Little Mt Ord Viewpoint.   I think this is the area where a recent wildfire took place so I don’t know if that trail is still open.   It is a MODERATE-rated narrow rocky jeep trail with some off-camber sloping sections.  Two-Up ATVs and 2WD ATVs are usually okay on this side-trip.   It arrives at a spectacular southbound viewpoint looking down on SR87 and the town of Sunflower.   I would rate the entire route of the day-ride as EASY-TO-MODERATE (Level 1–2\, GREEN–BLUE).   We will have lunch at that viewpoint or you can wait to eat at the top of Mount Ord under some pine trees.   Bring snacks\, beverages\, and a lunch for the ride. \nI am NOT planning on doing my optional 10-mile there-and-back side-trip down to the Ord Mine (Cinnabar ore –> Mercury) on the technical difficult FS 27.   If a few experienced club riders want to do it on their own\, they can leave the group on our return down from the top of Mount Ord.   It adds another 1-2 hours to the day-ride. I would rate FS 27 as DIFFICULT-EXTREME (Level 3-4; RED-BLACK) and only for the experienced PAUC club rider. Again\, I am NOT planning on doing that side trip this time.   Two-UP ATVs and 2WD fixed axle vehicles should NOT attempt that off-cambered steep mining trail with its moguls\, humps\, large ruts\, and loose rocks.  They should return back with the group down the FR 626 road to the staging area. \n  \nPOST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nHang around for a few moments to say Goodbye to your fellow riders and to make sure everyone made it back.   Our club will be providing cake slices\, cookies\, and/or brownie bites for a post-ride social event Desert Dessert Bar after the ride to top off the ride.   Hang around for a little while to socialize and decompress after re-trailering your vehicles. \n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThe primary ride’s trail rating is rated as an EASY–MODERATE (Level 1–2\, GREEN–BLUE)  on smooth forest road. (Definition: May have some spots that are off-camber; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12  months of riding experience). UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.  2WD vehicles okay.  Two-Up ATVs s/b okay for passengers.   Low range gear recommended for a few rocky areas. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe large staging area is 1.1 miles WEST of SR 87 (N Beeline Highway a.k.a. Duthie-Martin Hwy) on the paved Sycamore Creek Road.   This is few miles north of the town of Sunflower AZ on SR 87 (N Beeline Highway).  The intersection is 0.6 miles north of Beeline Hwy mile marker 222 and approximately 33.9 miles north of the Fountain Hills AZ intersection of Shea Blvd & SR 87 (Beeline Hwy).   Get into the northbound left lane as you pass over the Kitty Joe Creek bridge at mile marker 222 to turn WEST onto the Sycamore Creek Road intersection.   Go down the Sycamore Creek paved road 1.1 miles to the staging area on a small plateau. \nGoogle Maps has the approximate coordinates of the staging area at N33°55.814′ W111°27.902′  (or 33.930233\, -111.465033).  Just copy the coordinates into Google Maps satellite view to see the staging area or use our Google Maps embedded map at the bottom of our ride description.  Give yourself enough travel time to get there early.  We will leave the staging area at 9:00AM for the ride. \n  \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker. This will be a 50-mile roundtrip Easy-to-Moderate desert ride through some varied and beautiful desert / mountain scenery.  Dress appropriately and keep hydrated. BRING A TRAIL LUNCH\, SNACKS\, AND BEVERAGES. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  TOTAL MILEAGE WITH SIDE TRIPS IS APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each rider should know their machine’s fuel consumption on changing elevations/speeds. \nHelmet that is properly fitted\, fastened\, and has a USDOT safety rating for those 18 years of age and younger who ride on an OHV. Riders in an OHV such as a ROV / UTV / SxS or similar vehicle\, while recommended for safety\, do not require a helmet unless a rider is under 18 years of age. DESCRIPTION:This trip will start off Gates road right pass the rail road tracks on the right.  I have not been on this trail for a year or two so I do not know the conditions of the trail. So it could be hard or not. It is about 70 miles round trip. Lunch will be at Mic Donald  or Taste freeze (group decides). After lunch we will head back to the trucks. It will be a loop so we will try not to hit the same trail twice.  Speeds will very depending on road conditions. I am more of a fast rider. SUMMARY:PAUC Sedona Red Rock Ranger District OHV Area Ride
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Sept 26\, 2020  Sedona Red Rock Ranger District OHV Area Ride \nRIDE DESCRIPTION\nThis is a summer and fall favorite to escape the heat.  The Cottonwood/Sedona Red Rock Ranger District OHV Area is expecting sunny 61°–88° temps that Saturday.  We have not done this ride for a while.  Sadly\, both the Honaki and Lapatki Indian Heritage cliff dwelling sites are CLOSED due to the Coconino Forest pandemic mitigation guidelines.  There are limited dispersed camping spots within a ½ mile of the staging area at Parking Lot # 3 but it unknown about their availability in this high traffic season or if allowed due to the pandemic mitigation guidelines.  Check with the Red Rock Ranger District or Coconino NFS websites for up-to-date advice.  Our flight leaders are planning to drive on the main N/S arterial FR525 trail and adjoining Ranch Loop + Diamondback Gulch + Outlaw side trails in this scenic OHV Area.  Check the TRAIL RATING section for trail section difficulty ratings. \n  \n  \nThere will be a 20-vehicle registration limit unless additional flight leaders volunteer to lead.  This ride will only be open to PAID SUPPORTING MEMBERS (ie. no guest vehicles… have your friends join the club) and not opened to our Facebook group members.  IF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, EMAIL ME OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW. 4  (6-7 vehicles & trailers) = 900’ South of Hwy 89A on Angel Valley Road \n[ 34°48’49.5″N 111°54’03.0″W  (34.813735\, -111.900844) ] \n  \nFLIGHT LEADERS AND TAILGUNNERS NEEDED\nBill Poppo and I are looking for an experienced member with a radio to volunteer as our tailgunners.  Otherwise\, a responsible rider will be appointed at the staging area.   Other riders with radios can volunteer as mid-pack wingmen to maintain radio contact.  We are also looking for another flight leader. \n  \nROTATION METHOD \nWe will use the “rotation method” on this ride because of the many turns and forks in this popular OHV Area.  We still collapse the flight groups occasionally at major turns to maintain radio contact and insure that people followed the correct route.   Bob and Bill use a “rotation method” on some club rides where the ride leader stops at the turn to drop off the #2 vehicle (pin) before proceeding with vehicle #3.  The dropped pin #2 vehicle directs all the following riders onto the correct trail and then rejoins the group at the back of the pack in front of the tailgunner vehicle.  This “rotation method” limits a slow vehicle from losing sight of the group and taking everyone behind them down a wrong trail trying to catch up or inadvertently following another group.  It also allows the ride leader to maintain a good pace and assess trail conditions ahead and to check his GPS track.  We will also attach colored trail marker tape to every vehicle’s bumper or roll cage so we can identify our different flight groups from other vehicles riding in this popular OHV area.  There have been times where riders started following some other group or dust trail by mistake and taking everyone behind them down the wrong trail.  Not everyone brings radios to hear the turn instructions and approaching traffic announcements. \n  \nPOST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nIt has not been decided if we will be hosting a post-ride Desert Dessert Bar (sodas\, water\, cookies\, cake slices\, brownie bites) at this time due to the multiple parking lots and people anxious to drive home at the end of the ride. \n  \nCOMMUNICATION\nLeader\, mid-pack wingmen\, and tailgunner will be on GMRS/FRS Channel 5 (sub-channel 0) in case you want to bring your walkie-talkies or CB / HAM radios.  The corresponding UHF channel frequency is 462.6625 MHz depending on your radio.  I highly recommend bringing a walkie-talkie to listen to approaching traffic and trail conditions. \n  \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker. DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO THE PUBLIC:  Saturday\, May 30\, 2020  PAUC Mount Ord – Mt Peeley Trailhead – Mazatzal Wilderness Ride \nI’m trying to do rides that stay away from the weekend crowds during the COVID-19 pandemic but still near Phoenix.   This is another one of my older Four Points of the Compass rides to escape the heat and give members\, visitors\, and potential new members a chance to explore new areas that they might not normally ride.   The Mount Ord area is expecting sunny 70°–96° temps on Saturday.  I have not posted this ride since August 2017 so I don’t know the current trail conditions. \nIF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, EMAIL ME OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW.    Member guests and friends would like to go on this fun scenic ride.   RIDE INCENTIVE:  Preferential placement to front of the pack to those offering an extra open seat in your SxS or UTV for the ride. \n  \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES:   Please observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.   If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.   No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.   Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.   All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing.  If you don’t feel well or have not practiced self-quarantine for the past two weeks\, DO NOT come on this ride and put others at risk!   All participants MUST wear a mask or dust mask\, kerchief\, bandana\, scarf\, or other means of protective personal equipment for their personal safety as well as for the safety of other participants. \n  \nRIDE HIGHLIGHTS \n\nMazatzal Wilderness Mountain Range (Mt. Peeley Trailhead)\nMount Ord Lookout/Viewpoint\n1-mile side-trip to Pela Mine Oven (if still there)\n2-mile side-trip to Little Mt Ord Viewpoint (if not closed due to 2016 wildfire recovery)\n\n      \n     \nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nOn Saturday May 30th\, at 9:00 AM\, I am taking a few friends on a ride north of the Sunflower AZ / Four Peaks Tonto National Forest area over to the Mazatzal Mountains (Mt Peeley trailhead) and then up to the top of Mount Ord Lookout.   It will have a couple of extended side-trips to scenic viewpoints.  This is a 50-mile ride that takes 6.5 hours (with scenic meet-and-greet stops & lunch) through some varied and beautiful high desert / mountain scenery.  Bring a camera for those Kodak moments. \nSet OHV odometer to zero (0) at the staging area.  Our first leg of the ride will be a 20-mile round-trip scenic ride north of the staging area on FR 201 into the shady pine trees up to the Arizona Trail / Mazatzal Wilderness Mountains trailhead.   This is a very smooth scenic ride (usually “passenger car smooth”) on graded road from 4000′ to 6700′.   We will have a short 1-mile side-trip on the way down a Moderate-rated rocky trail to the Pela mine oven.   The area was known for mining Cinnabar ore to make Mercury. Hopefully\, the watershed rains have not torn up that trail too bad.   On the way up to the Mt. Peeley trailhead\, there is one of those “Wow!” moments coming around a bend and seeing the sunlight hit the Mazatzal Mountain range.   We will have some short stops on the way for those special Kodak moments.  I t is a 20-mile smooth roundtrip ride but extremely enjoyable and scenic!   We backtrack and return to the staging area on the same FR 201 route. \nThe second leg of the ride will then cross to the EAST side of SR 87 to climb the FR 626 road up to the top of Mount Ord.   The description of the Mount Ord Lookout trail can be found on page 120 of the 2nd edition of the “Guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails” (by Charles A. Wells & Matt Peterson).  It is 12-miles long with steep grades and elevations ranging from 3200′ to 6700′.   It is fully-graded and usually smooth enough for a passenger car to get to the top. \nThe 3\,256′ elevation rises immediately and continuously from the SR 87 & FR 626 Mt Ord intersection to the top at 6\,747′.   On our way\, we will have a 2-mile side-trip on FS 1688 to Little Mt Ord.   I think this is the area where the 2016 wildfire took place so I don’t know if that trail is still open.   It is a MODERATE-rated narrow rocky jeep trail with some off-camber sloping sections.  Two-Up ATVs and 2WD ATVs are usually okay on this side-trip.   It arrives at a spectacular southbound viewpoint looking down on SR87 and the town of Sunflower.   I would rate the entire route of the day-ride as EASY-TO-MODERATE.   We will have lunch at that viewpoint or you can wait to eat at the top of Mount Ord under some pine trees.   Bring snacks\, beverages\, and a lunch for the ride. \nI am NOT planning on doing my optional 10-mile there-and-back side-trip down to the Ord Mine (Cinnabar ore –> Mercury) on the technical difficult FS 27.   If a few experienced club riders want to do it on their own\, they can leave the group on our return down from the top of Mount Ord.   It adds another 1-2 hours to the day-ride. I would rate FS 27 as DIFFICULT (Level 3; RED) and only for the experienced PAUC club rider. Again\, I am NOT planning on doing that side trip this time.   Two-UP ATVs and 2WD fixed axle vehicles should NOT attempt that off-cambered steep mining trail with its moguls\, humps\, large ruts\, and loose rocks.  They should return back with the group down the FR 626 road to the staging area. \n  \nPOST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nHang around for a few moments to say Goodbye to your fellow riders and to make sure everyone made it back.   Our club will be providing cake slices\, cookies\, and brownie bites for a post-ride social event Desert Dessert Bar after the ride to top off the ride.   Hang around for a little while to socialize and decompress after re-trailering your vehicles. \n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThe primary ride’s trail rating is rated as an EASY–MODERATE (Level 1–2\, GREEN–BLUE)  on smooth forest road. (Definition: May have some spots that are off-camber; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12  months of riding experience). UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.  2WD vehicles okay.  Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers.   Low range gear recommended for a few rocky areas. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe large staging area is 1.1 miles WEST of SR 87 (N Beeline Highway a.k.a. Duthie-Martin Hwy) on the paved Sycamore Creek Road.   This is few miles north of the town of Sunflower AZ on SR 87 (N Beeline Highway).  The intersection is 0.6 miles north of Beeline Hwy mile marker 222 and approximately 33.9 miles north of the Fountain Hills AZ intersection of Shea Blvd & SR 87 (Beeline Hwy).   Get into the northbound left lane as you pass over the Kitty Joe Creek bridge at mile marker 222 to turn WEST onto the Sycamore Creek Road intersection.   Go down the Sycamore Creek paved road 1.1 miles to the staging area on a small plateau. \nGoogle Maps has the approximate coordinates of the staging area at N33°55.814′ W111°27.902′  (or 33.930233\, -111.465033).  Just copy the coordinates into Google Maps satellite view to see the staging area or use our Google Maps embedded map at the bottom of our ride description.  Give yourself enough travel time to get there early.  We will leave the staging area at 9:00AM for the ride. \n  \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker. BRING A TRAIL LUNCH\, SNACKS\, AND BEVERAGES. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  TOTAL MILEAGE WITH SIDE TRIPS IS APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each rider should know their machine’s fuel consumption on changing elevations/speeds. \nHelmet that is properly fitted\, fastened\, and has a USDOT safety rating for those 18 years of age and younger who ride on an OHV. Riders in an OHV such as a ROV / UTV / SxS or similar vehicle\, while recommended for safety\, do not require a helmet unless a rider is under 18 years of age. The Phoenix ATV/UTV Club promotes the use of helmets on all its rides. Eye protection is required for operators of vehicles not equipped with a windshield. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 16\, 2020  Cherry – Goat Peak Trail – Mingus Mtn – Jerome Ride \nThis is another one of my favorite Four Points of the Compass rides to escape the heat.  The Cherry – Mingus Mtn – Jerome area is expecting sunny 51°–81° temps on Saturday.  We have not done this club ride for a while and enjoyed ourselves doing an exploratory trail conditions ride there last week. \nWARNING:  This is not a typical “Bob” club ride.  This ride is for experienced veteran riders that have the ability to ride at medium-to-high speeds on rocky uneven terrain.  The FR132 Goat Peak Trail and FR413 trail around Mingus Mountain is rated a Moderate-Difficult (Level 2-3; Blue-Red) difficulty.  This ride is not for the faint of heart or for those having issues with heights and/or riding narrow shelf canyon trails with 500′ drop-offs.  You must know your vehicle and be an alert driver to make this ride. \nIF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, EMAIL ME OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW.   Member guests and friends would like to go on this fun scenic ride.  RIDE INCENTIVE:  Preferential placement to front of the pack to those offering an extra open seat in your SxS or UTV for the ride. \n  \nRIDE HIGHLIGHTS \n\nDestination ride to historic Jerome on narrow steep rocky forest road trails around Mingus Mountain.  This is an 80-85 mile ride that takes 8.5 hours at a minimum with a fast small group.  Elevations range from 4500′ to 7800′.\nWe will be traveling from I-17 exit 278 and SR169 from high desert near Cherry on FR96 onto the Goat Peak Trail FR132 and then around the Mingus Mountain Loop Trail FR413 to Jerome with various scenic stops along the way.\nThe Powell Springs Campground with vaulted toilets is CLOSED. [N34° 34.718′ W112° 04.162′]\nWe plan to eat lunch in the United Verde Mine parking lot behind the Fire Dept in Jerome.  Most of the restaurants and businesses are temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 Stay-at-Home public health directives.\nOn our return\, a second destination highlight will be to the top of the 7815′ Mingus Mountain Vista Observation Point and Hang Glider Launch Platform overlooking the red rock Cottonwood/Sedona/Verde Valley area 4500′ below for one of those “Wow!” Kodak moments.\n\n       \n         \n        \n  \nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nOn Saturday\, May 16th\, at 8:00AM\, I will take a few experienced veteran riders on an 80-85 mile ride with scenic meet-and-greet stops through some varied and beautiful high desert / pine tree mountain scenery. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each driver should know their vehicle’s gas consumption and plan accordingly for changing elevations and speeds.  I recommend being prepared so I carry a 2-gallon Kolpin container of gas just in case.  You CANNOT buy gas in Jerome or along this route. \n  \nThe first leg of the ride will be to travel the high desert landscape northwest on FR96 to Cherry Creek Road with a side trail rest stop near the CLOSED Powell Springs Campground [N34° 34.718′ W112° 04.162′].  We will then ride the Goat Peak Trail (FR132) up to Mingus Mountain and loop the eastern slope on FR413 and descend down the narrow shelf road to Jerome for lunch.  On our return\, the group will ride SR89A for 7.5 miles on pavement to the FR104 dirt road turnoff and head up the western slope of Mingus Mountain to the 7815’ Vista Observation Point and Hang Glider Launch Platform as a second destination highlight.  We will then backtrack on FR104/FR413 to FR132 for our return to the staging area with another rest stop near the closed Powell Springs Campground before our return on FR96 to the staging area. \n  \nThe description of the Goat Peak Trail and Mingus Mountain Loop Trail can be found on pages 263-268 of the 2001 edition of the “Backcountry Adventures – Arizona” (by Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson).  With its many changing elevations\, you will need to be an active driver and keep your eyes on the road even though the scenic elevations are beautiful to look at. \nDepending on the size of the group\, the ride will take 8.5-9.0 hours for the 80-85 mile route which includes a 45-minute lunch in Jerome and a number of scenic meet-and-greet stops.  Pack a lunch\, snack & beverages for the trail. \n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThe 80-85 mile route is rated as a MODERATE-DIFFICULT level trail rating (Level 2-3\, BLUE-RED) with some EXTREME Level 4\, BLACK trail sections.  Definition: Will have MANY rough spots that are off-camber; many hilly/loose rock/bedrock spots and many steep 500′ slopes; recommended for riders with at least 3-4 years riding experience with ability to ride at medium-to-high speeds on rocky uneven terrain. Parts of the trail follow steep canyon shelf roads and washes\, which can change after heavy rains and flooding.  UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this 60″ trail. Low range gear and 4WD recommended for the loose rock areas.  YOU NEED TO BE AN EXPERIENCED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR VEHICLE TO MAKE THIS TRAIL. For safety concerns\, sport quads cannot participate and I don’t recommend passengers on Two-Up ATVs due to the loose rocky uneven terrain of FR132 & FR413. \nREFERENCE SCALE FOR DIFFERENT TRAIL BOOK RATINGS \nEasy / Moderate / Difficult / Extreme = Green / Blue / Red / Black = Levels 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe staging area is near the I-17 Dewey-Humboldt exit 278 on SR169 but not visible from the road.  I drive a white Ford Expedition SUV with a white 5×14 trailer and ride a black Polaris 500 Sportsman X2 ATV.   The ride will depart at 8:00AM so allow plenty of time to arrive there early and unload your vehicle and sign-in for the 7:45AM pre-ride safety meeting.  I plan to return to the staging area at 5:00PM. \nDIRECTIONS TO THE STAGING AREA:  Take I-17 to the Dewey-Humboldt exit 278.  Turn west (left) over the freeway and go 1.2 miles on SR169 to FR96.  The dirt road FR96 turnoff is just past the long guard rail at Mile Marker 14 on the north-side of SR169.  Go 0.1 miles north on FR96 to the staging area.  Overflow parking is also at 0.3 miles.   You can view it on the Google Maps Satellite view at 34°30’59.1″N 112°00’47.0″W (or enter the Google map coordinates 34.516417\, -112.013067).  Use our Google Map Feature at the bottom of the ride description to get turn-by-turn cellphone instructions from your home on your way. \n  \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES:  Please observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 12\, 2020  Bumble Bee – Mayer – Senator Hwy – Crown King – Cleator Loop Ride \nRIDE DESCRIPTION\nThis is one of my favorite Four Points of the Compass rides near Phoenix and is a summer favorite to escape the heat.  The Bradshaw Mtns/Crown King area is expecting sunny 45°–72° temps on Tuesday.  We have not done this ride for a while.  We will be heading up the easy front way into the pine tree Bradshaw Mountains from the I-17 Bumble Bee / Crown King Road. \n   \n  \nTwo-thirds of the ride is mostly on a two-lane well-maintained dirt road so the average speed will be 30-35 MPH to give the riders a fast breezy ride with scenic views\, and fun in the sun. This is a very easy fun ride from 2600’ to 6700’ passing counterclockwise northwest via Old Cordes to Mayer and then southwest/south on the mining trail Old Senator Highway to the old mining town/vacation homes of Crown King in the Bradshaw Mountains.  At the option of the riders\, we may stop first at the Antelope Creek waterfall and Bumble Bee Line-Cabin in the Government Springs Wash or simply shortcut transverse the Government Springs Wash for some sandy trail running on our way to Mayer.  We plan to eat on the trail somewhere in the shady Bradshaw Mtns along the Old Senator Hwy.  Afterwards\, we will continue south on the Old Senator Hwy to the  historical mining town of Crown King at 5900′. \n         \nWe don’t know the business impact of the COVID-19 public health directives has had on the historical town of Crown King.  A recent Mingus Mtn-Jerome exploratory ride revealed a number of closed rural businesses in Jerome.  Attendees will have time to walk around the historical town of Crown King.  Afterwards\, we will drive east and down the two CK switchbacks on the Crown King Road to the historical mining town of Cleator with a few viewpoint stops along the way.  This is a relaxing fast ride so we will take our time at our stops for sightseeing and photos. \n      \nIF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, EMAIL ME OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW.   Member guests and friends would like to go on this fun scenic ride. \n\nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES:  Please observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  If necessary\, we will go out on multiple flights to adhere to the public health guidelines.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay apart and off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing. If you don’t feel well or have not practiced self-quarantine for the past two weeks\, DO NOT come on this ride and put others at risk!  All participants MUST wear a mask or dust mask\, kerchief\, bandana\, scarf\, or other means of protective personal equipment for their personal safety as well as for the safety of other participants.\n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThis ride is rated an overall Easy-to-Moderate Ride [Level 1-2\, Green-Blue] but could occasionally have some difficult sections resulting from a recent washout.  Definition: May have some spots that are off-cambered; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12 months of riding experience).  UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.  2WD vehicles s/b okay.  Low range gear recommended for a very few rocky areas.  Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers. \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nDrive up I-17 up to the Bumble Bee/Crown King exit 248.  Turn west and head down the asphalt road to the bottom of the hill approximately 2.75 miles from the exit. The asphalt road ends at the bottom of the hill. The staging area is about a ¾ mile further down the Bumble Bee/Crown King DIRT ROAD on the west side of the road. You can view it on the Google Maps Satellite view at coordinates 34°09’41.0″N 112°09’58.7″W or (Google coordinates 34.161400\, -112.166300 ).   The SAFETY MEETING will be at 8:15AM.  The ride will depart at 8:30AM and return approximately 5:00-5:30PM.   Arrive early to unload your vehicle and sign-in.  This is a weekday club ride so we are not expecting a large turnout but who knows with cabin fever rising among our members. \nStaging area on Google Maps:\nEnter the GPS coordinates  34°09’41.0″N 112°09’58.7″W or (Google coordinates 34.161400\, -112.166300 ) into Google Maps and zoom out to see the way from the I-17 Exit 248 to the staging area OR use our Google Map Feature at the bottom of the ride description to get turn-by-turn cellphone instructions from your home on your way. \nTAILGUNNER NEEDED\nI am looking for an experienced member with a radio to volunteer as my tailgunner.  Otherwise\, a responsible rider will be appointed at the staging area.   Other riders with radios can volunteer as mid-pack wingmen to maintain radio contact. \nCOMMUNICATION\nLeader\, mid-pack wingmen\, and tailgunner will be on GMRS/FRS Channel 5 (sub-channel 0) in case you want to bring your walkie-talkies or CB / HAM radios.  The corresponding UHF channel frequency is 462.6625 MHz depending on your radio.  I highly recommend bringing a walkie-talkie to listen to approaching traffic and trail conditions. \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker. Dress appropriately and keep hydrated. BRING A TRAIL LUNCH\, SNACKS\, AND BEVERAGES. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  TOTAL MILEAGE WITH SIDE TRIPS IS APPROXIMATELY 90 MILES from the Bumble Bee staging area.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each rider should know their machine’s fuel consumption.  Gasoline MAYBE available in Crown King at the single gas pump outside the General Store at $6.50/gallon. We should arrive back at the staging area between 5:00-5:30PM. \nHelmet that is properly fitted\, fastened\, and has a USDOT safety rating for those 18 years of age and younger who ride on an OHV. Riders in an OHV such as a ROV / UTV / SxS or similar vehicle\, while recommended for safety\, do not require a helmet unless a rider is under 18 years of age. The Phoenix ATV/UTV Club promotes the use of helmets on all its rides. Eye protection is required for operators of vehicles not equipped with a windshield. If you don’t feel well or have not practiced self-quarantine for the past two weeks\, DO NOT come on this ride and put others at risk!  All participants MUST wear a mask or dust mask\, kerchief\, bandana\, scarf\, or other means of protective personal equipment for their personal safety as well as for the safety of other participants. \nRIDE DESCRIPTION\nThis is a very smooth fast scenic ride (usually “passenger car smooth”) on the fully-graded 2-lane dirt Cave Creek Road (FR24).  Average speed will be 30 MPH for some breeze and to allow members more time at the meet-and-greet scenic stops and on the slower mining trail side trips.  The main road description & GPS coordinates of the Cave Creek Road Trail and Big Maggie May Trail can be found on pages 412-417 of the 2001 edition of the “Backcountry Adventures – Arizona” (by Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson). \nRIDE HIGHLIGHTS \n\nDepending on the size of the group\, we may depart in multiple flights.  There will be a Sign-In roster sheet at the staging area.  The ride from the parking lot to the top of Humboldt Mtn is 12 miles on a two-lane passenger car smooth dirt road.\nThere are two scheduled vaulted toilet stops along this ride. One is at the Bronco Trailhead parking lot and the other is at the Cave Creek Trailhead parking lot near the Seven Springs CCC Campground.  The toilets may be locked and closed due to the lockdown orders throughout the Tonto National Forest.\nOur first DESTINATION HIGHLIGHT is a side trail 8-mile roundtrip ride on SR 562 rising from 3200′ up to the top of HUMBOLDT MOUNTAIN to see the FAA radar installation at 5150′.  Views of Horseshoe Lake\, Bartlett Lake\, Four Peaks\, and Camelback Mtn and surrounding Cave Creek Mining District generate one of those “Wow!” Kodak moments.  It is extremely enjoyable and scenic!  We backtrack and return to FR24 on the same SR 562 route.\n\n             \n\nNext\, we drive past the Seven Springs CCC Campground (No ATVs Allowed) so we will have a pee break stop next door at the Cave Creek Trailhead with its vaulted toilets (May be closed due to NFS lockdown).\nOur next two DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS are meet-and-greet photo stops at the Fifty-One Ranch Restored Stagecoach Stop stone cabin and at the CP Butte (bell rock formation) on FR24.  We continue north through Roundtree Canyon up to FR268 Bloody Basin Road.\n\n                \n\nDepending on our time constraints\, we plan to have lunch in a shady area of the Tangle Creek dispersed campground on FR268 or at Bob’s Top Secret Spot.\nRiding down FR268 Bloody Basin Road to Sheeps Bridge Crossing is our main DESTINATION HIGHLIGHT of the ride.  The last 9 miles downhill from Tangle Creek to the Verde river is rated MODERATE with lots of loose rock and off-cambered sections.  Recent rains may have made it worse than normal.  This section takes the most time for groups with the uphill return taking longer.\n\n          \n\nThe ride will be between 90-95 miles in 8-9 hours.  If time permits\, on our return\, we may take an optional side trip ride on the BIG MAGGIE MAY TRAIL [9.5 miles RT & 50 minutes] via the scenic Gray’s Gulch switchbacks to the remains of a stone line-cabin.\n\n \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe recovery vehicles parking lot is at the Blue Wash Trailhead staging area near Cave Creek AZ.  The ride will depart at 8:30AM after the 8:15AM safety meeting.  Get there EARLY to unload\, sign-in\, and meet-and-greet other riders.  Here are the directions to the staging area. \nDirections from East Valley / Scottsdale by I-101 & Pima Rd \nTake Pima Rd exit 36 on the I-101 and head north on Pima Rd 11.8 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stop sign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will pass the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Continue straight on Cave Creek Rd towards the Seven Springs area.  The staging area is at Mile Marker 2.3 on the right side of the road at N33° 52.622′ W111° 49.019′ (33.877033\, -111.816983) at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking lot. \nDirections from West Valley or North Phoenix Area. \nTake Carefree Hwy east to Scottsdale Rd (7200E).  Scottsdale Rd becomes Tom Darlington Dr north of Carefree Hwy.  Turn north on Tom Darlington Dr and go 0.9 miles north to Stagecoach Pass Rd.  Turn right (east) on Stagecoach Rd and go 2.0 miles (third stopsign) to Pima Rd.  Turn left (north) on Pima Rd and go 0.3 miles to Cave Creek Rd.  Turn right (east) at the stopsign and go 6.6 miles to the staging area.  You will pass the Bartlett Lake Rd turnoff at 4.2 miles.  Continue straight on Cave Creek Rd towards the Seven Springs area.  The staging area is at Mile Marker 2.3 on the right side of the road at N33° 52.622′ W111° 49.019′ (33.877033\, -111.816983) at the Blue Wash Trailhead parking lot. \nAn overflow parking/staging area is 0.2 miles further around curve at the bottom of hill on the west side of the Blue Wash (N33° 52.695′ W111° 48.935′).   \n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThis ride is rated an overall Easy-to-Moderate [Level 1-2; Green-Blue] trail rating but some trails may have washouts from recent rains or may have degraded in sections to an occasional Difficult (Level 3; Red) rating.  DEFINITION: Will have some spots that are off-cambered; some hilly/rocky spots and steep slopes; recommended for experienced drivers with ability to ride at medium to high speeds on rocky uneven terrain. Parts of the trail will follow washes which can change after heavy rains and flooding. SUMMARY:PAUC EXPLORATORY TABLE MESA OHV AREA RIDE
DESCRIPTION:April 18\, 2020 – PAUC EXPLORATORY TABLE MESA OHV AREA RIDE    \nOn Saturday April 18th\, at 9:00AM\, Bill Poppo and I will lead an exploratory PAUC CLUB RIDE in the Table Mesa OHV Recreation Area.  This is a desert and mountain hills ride through some varied and beautiful desert / mountain scenery. Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  Our plan is to explore some of the OHV trails to obtain GPS coordinates to lay out a FUTURE Geocache / Treasure Hunt event ride. \nSOCIAL DISTANCING BETWEEN MEMBERS AND VEHICLES:  Please observe public health directives of 6’-8’ between people and gatherings of <10 people.  No handshaking or high-fives or hugging.  Try to exercise caution and stay off to the side of individuals instead of being downwind of them when talking.  All vehicles will maintain adequate spacing to limit dust conditions and social distancing.  All participants must wear a mask or dust mask or kerchief\, bandana\, scarf\, or other means of protective personal equipment for their personal safety as well as for the safety of other participants. \nRIDE DESCRIPTION\nThe general riding area is northwest out of the Table Mesa OHV Recreation Area.  We will plan out the adventure route at the staging area.  Sometime during the day\, we hope to ride northwest down to the Aqua Fria River water crossing #2 which is usually a shallow stream at this time of year.  We don’t know the water levels at this time or if it is crossable. On the other side of the stream crossing\, we will take trail 9999 towards the Indian Fort.  Our destination highlight stop will be at the Indian Fort [N34° 01.198′ W112° 10.757′] at approximately 5.5 miles.  You will be able to climb to the top of the Indian Fort via a narrow steep slot crevasse about 20’ up with handholds and solid rock step ledges.  It’s worth the climb for the Kodak moment and views over the river canyon and gold panning claims. \nAnother meet-and-greet stop is on trail 9959 at the mountaintop viewpoint looking back over the whole Table Mesa OHV Area.  We may descend into Cottonwood Creek Wash and stay on 9959 which follows a rocky and sandy wash and canyon with a narrow mining trail.  A local rancher has installed and locked a gate preventing access to the Tip Top mining district. \n POST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nOur club will be providing Costco apple pie\, cookies\, sodas\, and lemon/brownie bites for a post-ride social event Desert Dessert Bar after the ride to top off the ride.  Hang around for a little while to socialize and decompress after re-trailering your vehicles. \n STAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe ride will start from the Little Pan Staging and Campground Area site which is 3.4 miles (15 min) from the freeway into the Table Mesa OHV Recreation Area at 9:00AM. \nYou can view the staging area on the Google Maps Satellite view at N34°00’14.4″W 112°09’41.5″ (or enter the Google map coordinates 34.004001\, -112.161515). You can also print out a Table Mesa Route Map from the following BLM URL address: \nhttp://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/recreation/camping/dev_camps/table-mesa.html \nDirections to the Little Pan Staging Area:  Take I-17 to the Table Mesa exit 236.  Turn west (left) over the freeway and take the first right (north) two-lane frontage road on the west side of I-17 onto W Table Mesa Road. Do not miss this turn or you will get back on the freeway.   Proceed 1.7 miles NW on W Table Mesa Road (dirt road) past the pipeline to the first intersection and take the right fork NNW onto the AZCO Mine Road (trail 9999). Go on this right fork “pot-holed” road for 0.7 miles and turn left (west) onto the Little Pan Mine Road (trail 9998).  Continue west on Little Pan Mine Road for 1.0 mile over a small rise and turn right into the Little Pan Staging and Campground Area lot & vaulted toilet by trail 9998B. \nGet there early by 8:00AM to unload your quad\, sign-in\, and meet-and-greet the riders.  The SAFETY MEETING will be at 8:45AM.  The ride will depart at 9:00AM.  Depending on the sign-up response\, we may go out in multiple flights. \nTRAIL RATING\nOverall\, the Table Mesa OHV Area is usually rated an Easy-to-Moderate (Level 1-2; Green-Blue) trail rating but some trails may have washouts from recent rains or may have degraded to an occasional Difficult (Level 3; Red) rating.  DEFINITION: Will have some spots that are off-camber; some hilly/rocky spots and steep slopes; recommended for experienced drivers with ability to ride at medium to high speeds on rocky uneven terrain. Parts of the trail follows washes\, which can change after heavy rains and flooding. SUMMARY:PAUC Western Sedona Ride
DESCRIPTION:This ride is just southwest of Sedona. It is basically the same as the “Show Me” ride with 2 differences. 1. We will not be taking the Power Road. 2. We will go to the Palatki Ruins for a guided tour (I have reservations)and the Honanki Ruins for a self guided tour.\nThis is one of the most beautiful rides ever! We will see picture perfect scenes of the red rock formations and ancient Indian ruins and pictographs so make sure to bring your camera. The difficulty ranges from easy to moderate with some hills\, whoopti doos and fun stuff. \nBoth Indian ruin sites involve a short hike. (If you aren’t interested in the hike to see the ruins\, you can take a nap and look at the photos when the hikers return. ) \nWe will stop for lunch at the Palatki Indian ruins where there is a restroom and shaded picnic tables. Our tour begins at 12:15 sharp but we should have time to use the facilities and eat before the tour. The National Forest Service requires a Senior Pass\, Annual pass or a Sedona day pass ($5) all of which work for both Indian ruin sites. One pass per vehicle needs to be displayed on your dash in the parking lot or hanging from your rear-view mirror signature side up. A pass can be purchased at the site if necessary. (No one has ever checked the vehicle passes or asked us to pay but just in case……) Forest rangers will tell you about the sites. \nPalatki is actually two sites. One is the actual ruins of the Sinaqua Cliff Dwelling and the other is over 1\,000 petroglyphs and pictographs carved and painted into the rocks and formations by prehistoric natives that occupied the area during various times in ancient history. The Palatki Ruins are hidden behind some trees and if you didn’t know the dwelling was there\, it would be easy to miss. Palatki is a Hopi Indian word meaning “red house”. The cliff dwelling was built by the Sinaqua Indians (Spanish for “without water”) about 1150 and was mysteriously abandoned at about 1300. It’s interesting to note that the Sinaquas also built Montezuma Castle\, the cliff dwelling ruins about 50 miles east of this site near Camp Verde\, Arizona. It’s plausible that the Sinaquas were eliminated by other enemy tribes in the area or vacated this area due to a lengthy drought adversely affecting their ability to grow necessary crops. \nAfter lunch and the Palatki Ruins tour\, we will head over to the Honanki Ruins about 4 miles away. This will be a self guided tour. \nThe Honanki (Hopi for Bear House) Ruins sit at the base of Loy Butte on the sheltered west-facing cliffs. They are among the largest ancient population sites in the Verde Valley\, occupied between AD 1130-1280. The site originally contained about 60 rooms. The cave is rich with pictographs; some date back to 2000 BC\, long before the the cliff dwellings. Most of the pictographs are from the Sinagua and date to AD 900-1300. \nStaging area: Take I-17 north to Hwy 260. Head west to 89A. On 89A go north approximately 1 mile north of the Page springs turnoff to FS 525 on the left. There is a kiosk at the staging area about a mile from 89A on the left side of the road. I drive a white motorhome pulling a green Honda Talon. \nWe will have a quick drivers meeting and review the rotation. \nThere will be plenty of pink jeeps and people out exploring in their ATV rentals so we will need to be courteous drivers and be aware of any on coming traffic. We will meet at 8:15 and leave the staging area at 8:30 so that we won’t be late arriving at Palatki. (I will be driving up the day before to camp and you are welcome to camp as well.) \nBring a camera\, lunch\, snacks and plenty of water. \nI can only bring 10 people due to the size of the cliff dwelling ledge at Palatki. The first 10 people (not 10 buggies) to notify me via text 623-692-5908 will be on the ride list.

DESCRIPTION:  Feb 8\, 2020 – Four Peaks Mountain Summit + EL Oso Mine + Rolls OHV Area Ride (Northeast of Fountain Hills / Fort McDowell area)\n\nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nThis is one of my FOUR POINTS OF THE COMPASS rides that gives members\, visitors\, and potential new members a chance to explore new areas that they might not normally ride.  This is also one of those fun rides where you want to bring the wife\, family\, or that friend that you been wanting to convince about getting into ATV riding to come along.   The 7-day weather forecast is expecting 49°-73° with sunny weather.  Dress appropriately in layers and keep hydrated. \nOn Saturday\, Feb 8th\, at 9:30 AM\, a number of veteran ride leaders will lead a Phoenix ATV/UTV Club Ride up to the summit of the Four Peaks mountain range and over to the El Oso Mine on the scenic Mazatzal Divide ridgeline trail before descending back into the Rolls OHV Area to visit the Saquaro Lake Hidden Beach Cove # 2.   Depending on the member turnout\, we may go out in multiple flights.  Pack a lunch to eat at the top of the mountain.  Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.  From the top of the mountain\, you can look down on Roosevelt Lake through the pine trees and scrub pine. \nAfter the summit lunch\, we will do a side-trip on the scenic Edwards Park trail following the Mazatzal Divide ridgeline to the nearby El Oso Mine.  Those adventurous riders with flashlights can take a group walking tour of the many mine adit tunnels while the rest of the group has a meet-and-greet session.  Bring a tactical flashlight for each person to explore the bedrock tunnel system.  Your cellphone light will not provide enough light in the many side tunnels. \nThis is a 50-mile roundtrip Easy-to-Moderate desert hills ride up to the top of Four Peaks Mountain that takes 5-6 hours (including the meal & stops) through some varied and beautiful desert / mountain scenery. On the return\, riders can opt to drive back to the staging area OR extend their time by an hour and another 16 miles RT doing some exploring through the Rolls OHV Area out to the Saquaro Lake Hidden Beach Cove # 2.  Extra fuel is usually not required but each rider should know their machine’s fuel consumption. \n  \nALL MEMBERS\, GUESTS\, VISITORS\, AND POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOMED ON THIS RIDE.  IF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, CALL OR EMAIL ME TO LET ME KNOW.   I drive an ATV and I have a few friends that would like to go on this ride. \nDESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS \n\nFour Peaks/Rolls OHV Area\nMud Springs Trailhead\nFour Peaks Mountaintop (Lone Pines Trailhead Summit)\nViews of Roosevelt Lake\nMazatzal Divide ridgeline (Edward Parks trail)\nEl Oso Mine Tour\nRolls OHV Area + Saquaro Lake Hidden Beach Cove # 2\n\n  \nPOST-RIDE DESERT DESSERT BAR \nOur club will be providing brownie bites\, lemon bites\, cake slices\, cookies\, and sodas for a post-ride social event Desert Dessert Bar after the Rolls OHV Area ride to top off the day ride.  Hang around for a little while to socialize and decompress after re-trailering your vehicles. \n  \nTRAIL RATING \nThe Four Peaks/EL Oso Mine/Rolls OHV Area ride is usually rated an overall Easy-to-Moderate Ride [Level 1-2\, Green-Blue] but could occasionally have some difficult sections resulting from a recent washout.  Definition: May have some spots that are off-camber; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12 months of riding experience).  UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.  2WD vehicles s/b okay.  Low range gear recommended for a very few rocky areas.  Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers. \n  \nSTAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe ride will start from the Four Peaks/Rolls OHV staging area at 9:30 AM to give time to the West Valley members\, visitors\, and potential new members to get there. DESCRIPTION:Jan 25\, 2020 – Wickenburg-Stanton Goldfields/Ghost Town-Yarnell-Hassayampa River Box Canyon  \nOur Phoenix ATV/UTV Club is hosting a Jan 25th Wickenburg to Yarnell ride for members of the Colorado Cliff Riders club visiting the area from Westcliffe Colorado. \n  \nRIDE DESCRIPTION \nOn Saturday\, Jan 25th\, at 9:00 AM\, a number of veteran ride leaders will lead a Phoenix ATV/UTV Club Ride for members on a ride northeast of Wickenburg up to the Stanton Goldfields/Ghost Town and then to Yarnell for lunch and return via the Hassayampa River Box Canyon.   This is a 63-mile desert mountain and Hassayampa River Box Canyon ride that takes 7-8 hours (with scenic stops & lunch) through some varied and beautiful desert / mountain scenery (elev 1900′-4900′).   Depending on the group size\, we should be back at the staging area between 4:30pm-5:00pm.    Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.   If time permits\, we can visit the Shrine of St. Joseph of the Mountains in Yarnell which is a mountain path venue with stations of the cross using statues along the hillside pathway. \nALL MEMBERS\, GUESTS\, VISITORS\, AND POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOMED ON THIS RIDE.   IF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SEAT IN YOUR SXS OR UTV FOR THE RIDE\, CALL OR EMAIL ME TO LET ME KNOW.   I have a few friends that would like to go on this ride. \nThis is one of my FOUR POINTS OF THE COMPASS rides that gives members\, visitors\, and potential new members a chance to explore new areas that they might not normally ride.   This is also one of those fun rides where you want to bring the wife\, family\, or that friend that you been wanting to convince about getting into ATV riding to come along.   Hopefully\, the weather will cooperate for that Saturday. \n  \nDIRECTIONS TO STAGING AREA AND START TIME\nThe general riding area is northeast of Wickenburg.   The staging area is at the north Constellation Park parking lot across from the Wickenburg Rodeo Grounds at 935 Constellation Rd\, Wickenburg\, AZ 85390.   From SR60 (Wickenburg Way)\, turn north on Jack Burden Road at the McDonalds restaurant and go 300′ to the Constellation Road intersection.   Turn right on Constellation Road and head northeast 1.0 mile to the Wickenburg Rodeo Grounds.   Google Maps has the approximate GPS coordinates at N33° 58.837′ W112° 42.636′ or by copying the following map coordinates [33.980617\, -112.710600] into Google Maps Satellite view.   The ride will stage at the north roadside parking lot and depart at 9:00AM after the 8:45AM safety meeting.  Get there early by 8:15am to unload\, sign-in\, and meet-and-greet other riders. \n  \nTRAIL RATING\nThe Wickenburg-to-Yarnell ride is usually rated an overall Easy-to-Moderate Ride [Level 1-2\, Green-Blue] but could occasionally have some difficult sections resulting from a recent washout.   Definition: May have some spots that are off-camber; some hilly/rocky spots or few steep slopes; recommended for riders with more than 12 months of riding experience).   UTVs / SxSs / ROVs okay on this trail.   2WD vehicles s/b okay.  Low range gear recommended for a very few rocky areas.   Two-Up ATVs okay for passengers. \n  \nCOMMUNICATION\nFlight leaders\, mid-pack wingmen\, and tailgunners will be on GMRS/FRS Channel 5 (sub-channel 0) in case you want to bring your walkie-talkies or CB / HAM radios.   I think the UHF channel frequency is 462.6625 MHz depending on your radio.   I highly recommend bringing a walkie-talkie to listen to approaching traffic and trail conditions. \n  \nLUNCH \nThe Ranch House restaurant in Yarnell only holds 40 people and is only open to 2:00pm.   Depending on the group size\, we “may” arrive there at 1:00pm.   We may divide the flights between those riders that want a hot meal and those riders that bring their own lunch.   Those that bring a lunch can eat at the Shrine of St. Joseph of the Mountains parking lot. \n  \nVEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS\nAll ATVs\, UTVs\, & SxSs should be street-legal and have the Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Decal sticker.  Dress appropriately and keep hydrated.  Bring a lunch\, snacks\, and beverages.  Bring a camera for those Kodak moments.   Depending on the size of the group\, the ride will be about 63 miles in 7-8 hours including the meal & scenic meet-and-greet stops.   Extra fuel is usually not required but each driver should know their vehicle’s gas consumption and plan accordingly.   You can buy gas in Wickenburg. \nHelmet that is properly fitted\, fastened\, and has a USDOT safety rating for those 18 years of age and younger who ride on an OHV.  Riders in an OHV such as a ROV / UTV / SxS or similar vehicle\, while recommended for safety\, do not require a helmet unless a rider is under 18 years of age.  The Phoenix ATV/UTV Club promotes the use of helmets on all its rides.  Eye protection is required for operators of vehicles not equipped with a windshield.  You should use common sense for eye protection\, bandanas\, scarves\, and dust masks for large group riding due to the dust conditions anyway. \n  \nSAFE\, ETHICAL and RESPONSIBLE OPERATION OF YOUR VEHICLE \nAll Phoenix ATV/UTV Club members\, visitors\, and guests are expected to have appropriate vehicle registration\, license\, and personal insurance and to operate their vehicles in a responsible manner.   The Phoenix ATV/UTV Club is a responsible member of the OHV riding community.   As such the Club promotes safe and responsible operation of OHVs during club rides.   Arizona Revised Statute 28-1381 prohibits the operation of motorized vehicles\, including OHVs\, while under the influence of any substance that may impair the operator’s judgment or ability.   Therefore\, the Club prohibits the consumption or use of any substance during a club ride that has the potential to impair the operator’s judgment or ability. \nLive to Ride… Ride to Live!  Happy Trails… \nBob Maitzen\nPhoenix ATV/UTV Club \n(480) 363-7723\nBob.Maitzen@gmail.com

Low range gear recommended for some rocky areas.  Not recommended for Two-Up ATV passengers.  Kids under 18 years old riding on their own vehicles are NOT permitted on this ride due to varied trail conditions and safety concerns. \n  \nCOMMUNICATION\nLeader\, mid-pack wingmen\, and tailgunner will be on GMRS/FRS Channel 5 (sub-channel 0) in case you want to bring your walkie-talkies or CB / HAM radios.
